Business concept
Swerea MEFOS's business concept is applied research, development and consulting in Process Metallurgy, Heating and Metalworking, Environmental Engineering and Energy Efficiency mainly for the ferrous and nonferrous industries.
Swerea M EFOS is well known worldwide for its unique large-scale pilot plant equipment in metallurgy and metalworking and its ability to perform very large research projects.
Swerea MEFOS is financed by its 39 member companies in Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden and by 4 associated member companies in other countries as well as by Jernkontoret (the Swedish Steel Producers' Association), Energimyndigheten (the Swedish National Energy Administration) and VINNOVA (the Swedish Agency for Innovation Systems). MEFOS is also, to a large extent, financed by individual, confidential contract research, the EU and the EU-RFCS (Research Fund for Coal and Steel).
 Swerea MEFOS has approximately 84 employees, 40 of whom are university graduates. MEFOS is located in Luleå close to the Arctic Circle around one hour's flight from Stockholm. The Luleå University is located nearby.
Swerea MEFOS's research is divided into:
- Development of existing and new metallurgical processes using its large pilot-plant equipment
- Modelling, simulation and control of metallurgical and metal-working processes using advanced software and computers
- Energy savings and environmental engineering of metallurgical and other processes
 MEFOS's research activities are joint research for member companies and contract research for individual clients. The research is performed by three departments:
- Process Metallurgy
- Heating and Metalworking
- Metallurgy and Environment
On 1 April 2009 Swerea MEFOS joined the Swerea Group and the company is now owned by MEFOS – The Foundation for Metallurgical Research (64%) and Swerea AB (36%). The Swerea Group consists of five R&D institutes: Swerea IVF, Swerea KIMAB, Swerea MEFOS, Swerea SICOMP and Swerea SWECAST.
